The
Deal
This L5P gem is an emporium of hipster clothing and pop-culture
tchotchke. The store takes on warehouse proportions, including a
shoe loft, so plan to browse awhile.
The Goods
Brand-new threads, cool vintage and, yes, a little bit of junk.
You can update your collection of Elvis paraphernalia, put
together the perfect Halloween costume and find an outfit for
the evening all in one store. Clothes and shoes tend toward the
more vivid side of fashion, and they range from casual to club.
Gift ideas are endless: brass statuettes, candles, cookbooks,
leather sundries or any small, plastic object that memorializes
the latest cult-classic film. |

The
Treads
AJS is the calm within the shoe storm; plenty of seating and
wide aisles make shopping here a pleasurable experience. Shoe
aficionados converge to pick and plot their way through this
cavernous but organized store. There are "priced as marked
deals," but it takes a dedicated shopper to weed out the
less desirable shoes that are sometimes grouped within newer
styles.
The Accessories
A modest hat department provides a selection appropriate for
church while the purses, belts and jewelry show a wilder side.
What You'll Spend
The shoes are cheaply to moderately priced. Steve Madden
"Slinky": $29.50. Kenneth Cole diaper bag: $24.50
(regularly $50).
Browse-ability
The store is immense, making it difficult to hone in on any
specific type of shoe you may be looking for. Although the staff
is helpful, you'll have to make your way to the registers to ask
for assistance. |

The
Deal
Everything old is new again--and yet still sort of oldish.
There's a refurbished farmhouse look and early-morning
marketplace feel here, as naturally fashionable creative types
hunt for treasures. The store, owned by the Urban Outfitter
folks, has mastered the art of making each mass-produced item
seem fabulously one-of-a-kind.
Clothes & Accessories
Nary a piece hits the racks without some sort of beading,
embroidery or a subtly girlie-pleated hem. Pair tissuey layers
of organza in a sweeping skirt with a hearty wool sweater that
would put your grandma's knitting to shame. The splurge-worthy
accessories are knock-out: They seem to have the latest before
other boutiques even know it's "in."
The Home Front
You want your whole apartment to look exactly like this store,
but can't even afford their $1,200 antique-looking bedframe.
Settle for 3 glass-bauble wall hooks, 2 ceramic flower
candlesticks, a beaded jewelry box and a set of dessert plates
from France. |

The
Scene
The fashion police dropped a cool bomb on this Virginia-Highland
boutique, dolling up its exposed brick walls with lavender
plaster, blessing it with a hip and friendly sales staff, and
making it the place to shop for cost conscious, yet quirky,
young professionals. This style haven can be overlooked as it's
tucked in back of the plain shopping complex that includes the
American Roadhouse restaurant. Instead, this store would be more
at home in a storefront facing North Highland. After all, when
it comes to strutting, sidewalks make a better catwalk than
parking lots.
The Goods
The name of the game is shoes here, and you'll find boxes and
boxes of them neatly stacked in rows that take up three-quarters
of the store. With brands that include Chinese Laundry and Anne
Klein, you'll find anything from clunky-heeled tennis shoes to
retro sling back heels and knee-high boots. Accessorize with a
1950 era patent leather handbag, dangly jewelry and sunglasses
for the ultimate in cool. |

The
Scene
Don't let the name deceive you. This Beck-blasting,
faux-fur-coat-selling outpost has a Little 5 Points sensibility.
Prices are reasonable, and the threads are way funky. What else
would you expect from a boutique that's nestled near Watershed,
Indigo Girl Emily Saliers' restaurant, and a drive-through dry
cleaner?
The Goods
Tired of the typical old jean jacket? Posh dresses up the plain
with colorful fabrics and leather accents. Pair that with frayed
jeans and flared corduroys for a Gap ad look. Wanna-be ladies
can snap up faux-alligator handbags, clunky heeled slingbacks
and plaid schoolgirl shifts. Talk about Jackie O. with attitude.
Cool shoes abound, from clunky heeled Mary Janes to vibrantly
colored bowling shoes. Don't forget to accessorize with studded
belts and sequined belt buckles. |

The
Scene
Located in a quaint Vinings shopping area where Talbot's reigns
supreme, this contemporary clothier--and its semi-industrial
interior--calls to the 20s and 30s crowd. Cheerful, chatty shop
girls huddle around the cash register waiting to help you find
that perfect office to happy hour outfit.
The Goods
The idea here is classic clothing with contemporary flourishes.
Be on the lookout for structured long jackets by Shoshanna,
elegant woolens by Trina Turk, and other chic styles from Calvin
Klein and Max Studio. Strappy stilettos, Prada handbags, fun
feather boas, candles and fruit-scented perfumes dot the store. |
